Ford Thunderbird Trims
The first Ford Thunderbird went on sale on Oct 22, 1954 and a cult classic was born. The Thunderbird has been the topic of several classic songs and has inspired the dreams of many. The 4.2 million Thunderbirds sold over the years have included sedans and hardtops as well as a variety of roadsters, convertibles and coupes. This automotive icon was discontinued at the end of the 2005 model year.
Fords final Thunderbird offering was a 2 seat rear wheel drive convertible roadster with a 3.9-liter, 32-valve DOHC V-8 aluminum engine that delivered 280 hp. Keeping to its sports heritage the Thunderbird has 4 wheel independent suspension, anti-lock brakes and all speed traction control. To add to the classic look the 2005 Thunderbird has the egg-crate grill of the 55-57 Thunderbirds and the hood scoop of the 61 Thunderbird.
Starting with the 1995 Thunderbird we will list the major trim packages as we work our way to the final bird offered in 2005.
There was both a V6 and a V8 version of the Thunderbird in 1995. The LX coupe 2 door came standard with a V6 3.8 liter engine that could be upgraded to a V8 4.6 liter engine. There was also a V6 supercharged trim in the Super Coupe 3 door.
For 1996 the Super Coupe with the supercharged V6 was not offered leaving the LX coupe with the V6 4.6 liter upgrade as the only Thunderbird offered this continued for the 1997 model year.
There was no Ford Thunderbird offered in any trim package for 1998, 1999, 2000, or 2001. On 2002 the Thunderbird was once again offered with a V8 3.9 liter engine in a soft top convertible with a hard top option. 2003 saw the addition of the 007 Thunderbird with a hard top.
For 2004 the 007 Thunderbird was replaced with a Pacific Coast Convertible version with an optional hard top to go with the Soft Top convertible offering.
For the final year of the Ford Thunderbird Ford offered a special 50th anniversary Convertible with an optional hard top to go with its soft top version. And so ended a legend.
